Commitment Based Management, the cornerstone of the HP2 methodology, is an entirely new approach to the practice of management

Our work has evolved as a result of 30 years of experience with over 95,000 people inside of 150+ companies. Its philosophical roots tap into a series of solid traditions and practices.

Commitment Based Management

Commitment Based Management - Is the central focus of everything we do.

It is a new body of work that will be to this generation of business leaders and managers what quality was to the previous generation. The initial work was developed at Stanford Cal by Dr. Fernando Flores and Dr. Terry Winograd. It holds that the fundamental aspect of work is the making and fulfilling commitments and that management ought to be concerned with crafting, tracking, coordinating, and completing of commitments. This stands in stark contrast with the now dated current practices that focus on supervising activities.

In this new world an organization is simply a series of nested commitments

Once the people in your company begin to see the world this way, entirely new realms of performance open up. Commitment Based Management is simple to understand, but the process of implementing it requires a carefully integrated approach to learning, strategy, systems, process design, and organizational structure. To enable the successful and sustainable implementation of this new way of working we have built a coherent body of work that includes the following elements.

ADVANCED LEARNING THEORY

Our experience with athletes and the military has now been validated by a host of other contemporary authorities who concur that while the mind understands, it is the body that learns. The body can only learn through practice. No amount of tips, techniques, checklists, motivation, or understanding will produce competence, only practice will. Thus, our work focuses on teaching a specific set of powerful practices.

LINGUISTICS

Everything we do occurs in language; it is the medium we exist in. Effectiveness in today’s world requires competence in “linguistic moves.” This substantial body of work, developed by John Austin, John Searle, and Dr. Fernando Flores, has begun to move into the mainstream of business. When linguistic moves are combined with somatic practices, they become the foundation for a new set of reliable and sustainable leadership and management practices.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION

Experiential Education is another well-established body of work, which holds that people learn most effectively from experience. HP2 tempers experiential work with designed reflection and ongoing feedback so that the intended lessons are derived from a given experience.

SOMATICS

The term ‘Somatics’ has ancient roots. It comes from the Greek word for unified mind/body. In current usage, the term refers to the unity of mind-body-spirit. Since it is the body that learns, our work has a very strong somatic component that weaves through all of our practices. We don’t just provide understanding, but work somatically to produce embodied new practices.

CONTEMPORARY SYSTEM DYNAMICS

Contemporary System Dynamics is a body of work that looks at the nature of the human systems that we call teams, departments, divisions, and companies. In this case the focus is on teams and the phenomena of leadership, management, coordination, and mobilization inside of them. This element adds a depth to the work that can otherwise be dismissed as mere “team building.”

“FORTUNES ARE NOT MADE IN BOOM TIMES. . . THAT IS MERELY THE COLLECTION PERIOD. FORTUNES ARE MADE IN DEPRESSIONS OR LEAN TIMES WHEN THE WISE MAN OVERHAULS HIS MIND, HIS METHODS, HIS RESOURCES, AND GETS IN TRAINING FOR THE RACE TO COME.”
