We are no longer living in the Industrial Era
AT THE CENTER OF OUR WORK IS THE REALITY THAT WE ARE NO LONGER LIVING IN THE INDUSTRIAL ERA.
We have entered into a new historical era that we have termed the “Coordination Era.” In this new world the value generators are not industrial era factory workers but coordination workers. These are people who are educated, sophisticated, agile, mobile, and creative. They generate value by their capacity to effectively coordinate with others to produce customer satisfaction. To put it simply, they do not respond well to industrial era thinking and practices which still see management as supervision. Over the years there have been incremental improvements to the practice of management but the world is not moving incrementally thus the need for a management revolution – welcome to the cause!
We believe that the future is something we can design
Who are the people in your organization?
They are the actual players in inventors, designer and creators of your business world. To accomplish anything they depend on their every day coordination with each other. This is where HP2 makes its mark, building new practices for coordination, collaboration, and mobilization. Why is this so important?
Strangely, people today feel more and more isolated in the increasingly global, interconnected world. As our access to information and web-enabled networks grows, and our capacity to connect virtually to other people expands, people and organizations are more and more lost as to how to reach new customers, build a brand, and develop new offers. Many people and companies have come to realize that they don’t have the skills necessary to navigate in a constantly changing world and don’t know what to do about it. Hence, many organizations and
individuals are increasingly living in fear and anxiety about the future and lack confidence not only in their capacity to cope with the reality at hand, but with their leaders’ capacity as well. This is not a recipe for success.
In the midst of this swirl
We can point to a few who have not been lost. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are people who have been able to successfully navigate the realities of the world today. None of these men have degrees in management – two of them did not even finish college – yet they were receptive and responsive to the world around them and knew how to resonate with situations they found themselves in. They all invented themselves and their companies accordingly. How were these people able to configure the world that they invented? Were they born with this capacity? Why aren’t there more examples of people like them?
New practices are key
Our simple answer is that all of our corporate traditions for educating leaders and managers have been focused on the acquisition of knowledge, the quest for understanding, and the application of concepts. This is the traditional education model, and it doesn’t work! Knowledge is now a universal commodity and it is increasingly evident that this is not what we need to cope in today’s world. Instead, we need new practices that allow us to thrive in an increasingly global, constantly changing world, where communication is instant, the planet is the market, and competence is king.
Practices are new ways of being and acting that take shape over time.
Developing new practices requires practice, patience, and perseverance. If people only study and read about what we are teaching they will understand it, but they will not learn to act accordingly. It is new action that matters, not new understanding. In our world a person is said to “know” only once he or she is able to do something they were not able to do before. As such, consistent participation in a process where new action is taught and supported is the only way for authentic learning to take place.
The world today is one of constant change and disruption. Traditional management training that is heavy on financial and analytical skills does little to prepare people for this world. Instead we have executives looking for ‘certainty’ in a world that will never provide it. The world is making tectonic changes and these are all to often met with puny incremental responses. This is a strategy for tragedy.
Instead it is time to move in a new direction and reshape our thinking about the practices of leadership and management. We invite you to join us in helping shape a new world.
“FORTUNES ARE NOT MADE IN BOOM TIMES. . . THAT IS MERELY THE COLLECTION PERIOD. FORTUNES ARE MADE IN DEPRESSIONS OR LEAN TIMES WHEN THE WISE MAN OVERHAULS HIS MIND, HIS METHODS, HIS RESOURCES, AND GETS IN TRAINING FOR THE RACE TO COME.”
