Commitment Based Management (CBM)
We call our new body of work Commitment Based Management (CBM)
Here is what it is all about. ‘Modern’ management practices such as project management, organizational design, and employee evaluations were all invented by people who were born in the mid 1800s and were designed and deployed to enable the industrial era of the early 1900s. In those days management meant supervision and all of these practices were designed to enhance and measure the results of effective supervision. Consistent success in today’s world is driven by effective coordination and thus management has to be competent at enabling effective coordination, not at supervising routine industrial work.
Despite being outdated
Traditional practices still dominate the way businesses approach their financial accounting, human resource theory and practice, and organizational structures. HP2 guides organizations in leaving these relics behind by bringing to our clients an entirely new approach that enables them to dramatically enhance performance, production, and profitability.
Commitment Based Management is designed to be effective in the new world of business
The industrial era is over, and we have entered into a new historical era - the coordination era
The value generators in today’s companies are coordination workers. These coordination workers are people who are educated, agile and mobile. They are creative, innovative problem solvers and they generate value out of their effective coordination with each other. Accordingly, these people don’t respond well to industrial era management practices. Our work is designed to be effective with the contemporary workforce because we understand what drives them:
Today, people want to be self-generating/self-directing. They don’t need someone standing over their shoulder telling them what to do – this is, in fact, annoying and demotivating to today’s employee.
Today’s workers want to continuously improve and develop their competence so that they can remain competitive in the marketplace.
Coordination workers want what they do to make a difference in the world. They want to be part of something that matters.
If you look at these three drivers, historical management practices not only ignore them, they typically demean them as the dreaded ‘touchy-feely’, stuff. This historical blindness has dangerous strategic implications and long reaching negative consequences. Commitment Based Management opens entire new worlds of possibility. Once you begin to see that management isn’t about supervision but the design, coordination, and mobilization of commitments – everything changes.
It's a whole new world out there
Yes, it's a whole new world out there
But one fundamental of business hasn’t changed – your people determine your success or failure. You can buy all of the latest and greatest technology, strategic consulting, and executive coaching but; so can your competition. If you want to have a sustainable competitive advantage what matters is having Leaders who can:
- Innovate new ways of doing business
- Create a coherent mission
- Mobilize action
- Manage the mood of the organization
- Generate accountability and commitment
- Produce value for your stakeholders
...And while your world-class leaders may be the ones to design your new future, it is your managers who will deliver it. Today anyone can prepare spread sheets and run numbers. There is no magic in that.
Instead, you need managers who can:
- Rapidly mobilize teams to design and complete projects
- Consistently generate customer satisfaction
- Effectively build people’s careers
- Reduce cycle time
- Build trust and respect
- Invent new processes
- Build margin and profit
- Manage the mood in the organization.
- Coordinate action across the organization
Our results speak for themselves
Over the past 35 years we’ve added over $4 billion in combined revenue increases, productivity increases, and costs savings to our clients. HP2 can work with your company to make Commitment Based Management a central element of your organizational culture.
“FORTUNES ARE NOT MADE IN BOOM TIMES. . . THAT IS MERELY THE COLLECTION PERIOD. FORTUNES ARE MADE IN DEPRESSIONS OR LEAN TIMES WHEN THE WISE MAN OVERHAULS HIS MIND, HIS METHODS, HIS RESOURCES, AND GETS IN TRAINING FOR THE RACE TO COME.”
